Finally setup Jackie’s wireless home network so she can work from home. Her cable internet feed is in her living room downstairs while her computer is setup on a room upstairs. I connected the wireless router to the cable modem and installed the PCI Wireless adapter on her computer. Her computer picked up the wireless router signal, as well as a couple of other signals from around her neighborhood, including another linksys unsecured wireless access point. I then setup the wireless router for WEP encryption. I changed her wireless profile to match the WEP settings. I rebooted the computer and was able to connect withe WEP. However, when I changed the WEP name to something she chose, I clicked ‘Reset Security’ instead of ‘Save Settings’. This changed the security from WEP to some other setting. I had to connect the router directly to the ethernet port of the computer to reconfigure it.
Everything else worked perfect after I got the wireless setup. We were able to connect to VPN successfully and connected to her computer at work through pcAnywhere.
i also showed her how to access her COX email account via webmail.
Before I left, she reimbursed for the cost of the router and wireless adapter. She said she’ll also treat me to lunch at PF Chang’s.
We had a conference call regarding a DSL line for Scripps for redundancy. I was pretty much just a listener throughout the call. Scripps T1 line has gone down twice now after heavy rain so Lori suggested setting up a DSL line for redundancy. Mary is going to order a business grade DSL line with at least 1 static IP address. FNIS will order a 831 DSL router and create a half tunnel through our existing CISCO router. Traffic is supposed to automatically transfer to the DSL connection in case the T1 line goes down. Users will only notice about a minute of disconnection.
Replacement motherboard came in for Deb’s PC yesterday. Tech from Dell came at 1PM and did the swap. Got Deb on her PC again shortly after.
Called DHL for pickup of defective motherboard. Confirmation no: 100821
Jen had another prenatal checkup yesterday. The doctor advised her to get a nonstress test since she has not been keeping up with her kick count. I suggested she asked Juliet to drive her to Kaiser Zion, but she said she could manage on her own. Gave her directions to get there. She said all indications were okay. The baby is doing well. She’s scheduled to do another one on Friday.
Had dinner with the Title department. Title Manager and County manager recognized our efforts for 2005. Could not find parking and did not want to use the complimentary valet parking. I parked on the 30 minute reserved parking for ATM customers. I figured it was 7:00 pm, they shouldn’t tow my car away. All throughout the dinner I was hoping my car would still be there when I get back. It was.
Monica got locked out of her account. She changed her Novell password yesterday and now it would not let her get into her Windows account. I reset her Windows password, called the help desk to unlock her account, then synched her Windows account with her Novell account.
Rueben George called me while I was pulling in to Northside. There was a power failure around his house and when everything went back up, everything went fine except his outgoing mail are stuck in the outbox. This happened to him twice before so I reminded him that the last time this happened I had him call his cable company tech support. I guess he remembered that the tech support had him power cycle his cable modem. He asked me if I he should do that. I told him go ahead turn off your computer, turn off the cable modem, turn on the cable modem again, then turn on the computer. He said he’ll call back if he’s still having problems. He hasn’t called back so I guess that fixed the problem.
When Monica opened Excel, it gave her an error message that a file cannot be found. When I connected in to her computer I noticed it was the same issue another user in Rancho Bernardo had yesterday. The error message only happens when she was opening Excel from the NAL. When I launch Excel from the START menu, it opens up but it opens up like it’s just being opened for the first time even if she had been using Excel all this time. After that, Excel opens just fine from the NAL. I wonder if the MS updates causes this bizarre behavior.
Janet came back from vacation. Somebody else was working on her computer while she was gone. When Janet tried to login her computer, the login screen had the other person’s info on it. Janet put her names on the login screen but she was not sure what her Windows username was. After attempting to login a few time she got locked out. She called me while I was driving to the office. When I got into the office I found out she was putting in the wrong username. After putting in the right username she was able to get in fine. However, she probably locked out somebody else in the process. The system automatically unlocks accounts after 15 minutes so it shouldn’t be a problem.
Last Friday Jill got an Academic Achievement award from her school. She was one of two kids in her K1 class that got an award. Her K1 class is a combined kindergarten and grade 1 class. When they have more than usual number of kindergarteners, they put some of the more mature ones together with some first graders and combined them in one class.
The other girl in her class that also got an award was also a kindergartender. Jen and I wondered why no first graders were chosen. Were Jill and the other girl who are just kindergarteners doing better than the first graders in her class? Why were they giving the awards in the middle of the school year? Are they giving awards every end of a semester (fall, winter, spring)? If so, were there award ceremonies that were held that we did not know about because Jill was not a participant?
In any case, I’m proud that Jill is showing promise academically. She’s been doing well with her reading and writing. I hope she keeps up with it so she’ll have good opportunities when she goes to college.
